CENDEAC is a centre devoted to the study of the history, theory and criticism of art since the beginning of the 20th century.
Contemporary cultural policies, tend to reduce art to its media-friendly, or even spectacular dimension. While art centres, museums and “biennales” keep mushrooming everywhere, little support is given to any kind of productive reflection on art. The institutional space reserved for this, is increasingly limited to promotional instruments (catalogues, reviews, etc.), which necessarily foreclose its critical potential.
CENDEAC tries to work against the scarcity of materials and resources available to researchers, teachers, critics and all those who engage in an ongoing reflection on contemporary art. It attempts to go beyond the mere offering of information, striving to serve as an instrument for the production of knowledge, through a publishing house, an ongoing programme of lectures, courses and seminars, permanent working groups, regular research grants and the magazine Estudios Visuales.
